G Fresh
The Munki Boi General
G. Fresh launched Indianapolis based Munki Boi Entertainment with the hopes of helping make a way for the undiscovered talent from the Midwest to be heard, but never expected to be the voice the people would be singing along with. During a meeting of the minds by the artists on the label’s roster, the idea that the CEO jump in the booth changed things dramatically from that day forth. The single “On My Momma” was created using the in-house talents of Riddles on the beat, Gold E. on the hook and a feature from Yung Tone.
“People respect what I say in my music because they know that if I’m saying it, I’m living it,” said G. Fresh. “You can check my references. From the cars to the clothes, from the shine to the struggle, I’ve got it and I’ve done it.”
The successful reception of the song could be credited to the infectious beat, catchy hook and raw verses, or it could be all of the above combined with G. Fresh’s genuine street credibility. Either way, the CEO turned rapper was pushed into the spotlight as the forerunner for MBE. He has welcomed the opportunity to carry his city on his back like a badge of honor hoping to show the world how the Midwest gets down.
“The term ‘On My Momma’ is an expression that we say in the Midwest to put emphasis on what we’re talking about,” said G. Fresh. “Some people say ‘real talk’ and some people say ‘you feel me’ but in my hood we say ‘On My Momma!’”
Although he is from the most notorious projects (Haughville), being raised in a city known for the Indy 500 and the Indianapolis Colts, meant it was going to be tough gaining the wider range of support from all cultures of music lovers.
“We took the song to a hood club and a classy club to test it with the Djs and the people were feeling it across the board,” said G. Fresh. “The song really crossed over when we made a version for the Colts talking about the Saints for Superbowl and they started playing it every day on the news! ”
“On My Momma” has since received airplay in cities across the Midwest reaching and holding the number one spot on the countdown in Indianapolis for weeks before being retired. The video was then featured on MTVmusic.com and surpassed the online view counts of same day releases from artists such as Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne thanks to the support of his devoted Midwest fan base. Thousands of online views of the “On My Momma” video gained the attention of MTV Jams and the station began playing the video on television.
G. Fresh has continued to take his fans along with him on his journey to pull the spotlight to the Midwest by keeping them updated online with photos and daily posts as he’s traveled from The Grammys to the Superbowl. The rapper has shared and grown his fan base through collaborating on shows for artists such as Bone Thugs N Harmony and Wacka Flocka.
G. Fresh can be seen featured on the cover of the May 2010 Ozone Magazine, the February 2010 Midwest Leak Magazine, online at DJVladTV.com and between the sheets of Hip Hop Weekly, Metromix, Nuvo, and Show Off the Magazine.
